A Summer Evening By the Window at Washington and Oak.
'Lucy in the sky with diamonds' crooned the Beatles evergreen and ever mellifluous. I am writing this blog, literally. Not typing. Writing. The sunlight glimmers, trying to grope its way through the sycamore tree on the sidewalk. It is the pleasant warm light of early dusk and brings into profile a balmy June evening outside the framed sheetglass windows. The mottled patchwork of shadows plays a fox trot on the Primo Levi in my hands. A boisterous crowd of school children in tennis kits crosses the street, while their young blonde matron tries hard to prevent jaywalking. Meanwhile, two skateboarders dodge pedestrians on the opposite sidewalk, and give a high five before zooming away round the corner. Soon, a pair of runners jog by at a healthy trot, their well-toned chest muscles glisten with sweat in the reflected sunlight. A small kid with ruffled hair licks on his icecream cone, looks like its a Dublin Mudslide from the Ben & Jerry's down the street, and tugs on his grandmom's hand. He wants to break free. A posse of cops come in for a coffee, put their guns on the table, and look a snap which the youngest has passed around . Could it be his sweetheart? Was it 'Yesterday, when all my troubles seemed so far away' ? A young intern in his blue overalls, runs to catch the bus, the stethoscope draped casually around his neck, traces a graceful arc. A few undergrads in Twins tees lug home a couple of sixpacks of Miller's, probably some one is having a porch party tonight. With a deep rumble, some bikers cruise past on their Harley Davidsons. A young chinese woman is working on her copious notes at the table by the sidewalk. She looks up, spots her friend and runs, hugs and the two girls walk back chattering, with a spring in their steps. The wind picks up pace, the Stars and Stripes across the street flutters gaily and the first heavy drops fall on a sultry day. “ While my guitar gently weeps”, the squall passes. And so does the evening rush hour traffic. The barista is folding up the wrought iron tables outside. It is time for me to unlock my shining brand new red and silver bike parked to the 'No Parking' sign outside and take the 'Long and winding road' back home.
